1 Start with a $12 fix before you rent any equipment
Half the standing water calls I hear about are caused by one clogged downspout extension dumping 600 gallons per hour onto the same 4-square-foot patch of ground. Walk your gutters first. A flexible downspout extender moves that water 4 to 6 feet away from the house and costs nothing compared to what a wet foundation costs. I run mine toward the street swale, which is exactly where Charlotte County wants it to go.
2 Pump out what is already there
If you have a low spot holding 3 to 12 inches of water after a rain, a submersible utility pump is the fastest tool you own. Drop it in, run a garden hose to your swale or street, and the water is gone in 20 to 40 minutes. I keep one in the garage year-round — rainy season in Southwest Florida runs June through September and does not give you much warning. This pump handles up to 1,800 gallons per hour, which is enough to clear a flooded backyard low spot before lunch.
3 Kill the mosquitoes while you solve the drainage
Draining standing water takes a day. The mosquitoes it already bred take a week to die on their own. Mosquito Dunks are the right call here — they contain Bti, a naturally occurring bacteria that kills larvae without harming your dog, your fish, or the anoles on your lanai screen. Drop one in any water that will take more than a week to drain: low spots, catch basins, ornamental ponds. In Zone 9b heat they last about 30 days.
4 Fix the grade with a dry creek bed or swale
If the same spot floods every single rain, the ground is telling you water has nowhere to go. The real fix is a shallow swale — basically a gentle channel you cut with a flat spade that guides water toward your street or a low corner of the lot. Line it with river rock or Florida-friendly plants and it looks intentional. I used a 50-pound bag of pea gravel per 10 linear feet and it has not flooded since. The soil amendment below helps water actually move through Myakka's hardpan.
5 Install a French drain for chronic low spots
A French drain is just a perforated pipe buried in gravel that collects water underground and moves it somewhere useful — usually toward the street or a dry well. For a 20-foot run on flat Myakka soil, plan on a weekend and about $80 in materials. The NDS pipe and sock kit below is the cleanest DIY option I have found: the fabric sock keeps sand out of the perforations, which matters a lot in our sandy soil. Dig 12 inches deep, lay 2 inches of gravel, set the pipe, cover with gravel, cap with landscape fabric and sod.
6 Monitor what you cannot see with a soil moisture sensor
If you are on FPL and running an irrigation system, you may be making your drainage problem worse without knowing it. Florida law requires a rain sensor shutoff on irrigation systems, but a soil moisture sensor goes further — it skips your irrigation cycle when the ground is already saturated. During rainy season that could mean your system never runs at all, which is correct. The Orbit sensor below works with most 24V irrigation timers and has saved me about $18 a month on my FPL bill from June through September.
Standing water is a problem you can solve with a pump, a spade, and one Saturday — the mosquitoes are the part that cannot wait.
